Regatta Organization and Race Management

Sail Committee

Each year, California Yacht Club hosts 12-15 regattas, and the members of Sail Committee are the people that make this happen. As regattas are a key component to ensuring that CYC remains a premier yacht club, sail committee has one of the most important functions at the Club.

Each regatta we host has a chair who is responsible for organizing the event – their duties include promotion, selecting trophies, assembling the volunteer race committee (see below), and arranging for post-race hospitality. Other members of sail committee are responsible for maintaining our regatta equipment, setting up regatta registration, and writing the documents that guide the conduct of the races. There are a host of ways you could get involved – reach out to 2025 Sail Committee Chair Marilyn Cassedy ([email protected]) for more information.

Race Committee

One of the best ways for members without a boat to get involved in sailing and race management is to volunteer for the Race Committee! In 2025 CYC will run more than 50 days of sailboat racing on Santa Monica Bay, and we can't do it without a small army of active and engaged volunteers. Volunteers fill a wide variety of roles - from checking in competitors when they arrive at our facilities on land to setting the marks of the race course - so there's an opportunity for almost anyone to get involved. No prior racing experience is necessary.

If you're interested in learning more, you can attend a Race Committee Training or Race Committee Orientation Day, which are scheduled occasionally throughout the year. Alternatively, you can reach out to Lori Haythorn [email protected] for more information on next steps to get out on the water to work with our team!
