Regattas

California Yacht Club has a long history of hosting high-profile championship sailing events and year-round regattas serving one design, PHRF, cruising, and junior fleets.

This year, in addition to hosting several weekend regattas and the 21-week Sunset Series on Wednesday evenings, we are also hosting two Championship-level events: the C420 California State Championship and the Martin 242 North American Championship.

Our CYC Race Committee members are again supporting the 2026 San Pedro Olympic Classes Regatta, a major component of the 2028 Summer Olympic Games cycle.

And California Yacht Club is also proud to support women's sailing as the Organizing Authority—in conjunction with Women’s Sailing Association of Santa Monica Bay—for the Women on the Water/Women at the Helm Regatta.

We look forward to seeing you out on the water.

For more than 50 years, Star sailors have come to California Yacht Club to vie for the King of Spain trophy, the sterling silver Spanish galleon that was presented to CYC by the King of Spain in 1928. Past winners are a virtual who’s who in sailing, counting World Champions and Olympic medalists among the ranks. Santa Monica Bay offers some of its best sailing conditions in early summer, so competitors can expect sunny, warm days and mid-afternoon breezes in the 10 to 15 knot range. Post-race hospitality is sure to refuel the hardiest sailors after a competitive day on the water.

Our CYC Race Committee members are again supporting the 2026 San Pedro Olympic Classes Regatta, a major component of the 2028 Summer Olympic Games cycle. Top level sailing athletes from across the globe will descend on San Pedro and Long Beach this year to gain experience in the Olympic venue, and CYC members will volunteer in key regatta management roles both on and off the water.

The San Pedro/Long Beach Olympic Classes Regatta traces its roots back to the early 1960s, establishing itself as the first event of its kind in the United States. Over the next two decades, it evolved into the nation’s premier Olympic Classes regatta, playing a key role in the buildup to the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles. Throughout its history, the regatta has served as a vital training ground for aspiring Olympians, helping shape generations of elite sailors.

The WOW/WAH regatta has two divisions: Women on Water (WOW) — composed of all female teams and Women at the Helm (WAH) — composed of co-ed teams with a female driver. Both divisions race the same weekend in one regatta. Each division may have multiple classes, depending on entries. Each division will race in the same general area of Santa Monica Bay, but have separate starts and may have different courses.

The Organizing Authority for the event is the Women’s Sailing Association of Santa Monica Bay (WSASMB) in conjunction with California Yacht Club. The following Marina del Rey area clubs help sponsor the event: Pacific Mariner’s Yacht Club, Santa Monica Windjammers Yacht Club, Del Rey Yacht Club, and South Coast Corinthian Yacht Club

For more information go to WSASMB's Regatta Page or the Official Notice Board

King of the Hill
The “best of the best” from each of the classes in the Racing Division are invited to compete in this inverted-start race. This race will pit the best sailors in each class against each other, with the boat crossing the finish line first declared “King of the Hill” for that year.

Entry to this race is limited to those boats that receive an invitation. Invitations will be issued based on the final results of the 2026 Sunset Series, which ends the preceding Wednesday. Invitations will go to the top 1-4 boats in each class of the Racing Division based on average class size for the 2026 Sunset Series. Additional boats will then be invited based on end-of-the-season standings for the Marylyn Ritchie trophy (awarded to the boat with the best overall record in the Racing Division) to result in 21 invited boats.

The winner will be awarded the King of the Hill trophy which will remain on display at California Yacht Club. The King of the Hill trophy was a pre-existing CYC trophy that was re-dedicated to this new race in 2002. Joan Hill was the long-time Chair for the Sunset Series and a regular volunteer for CYC races. In 2003, Joanie died as a result of breast cancer and since then this race has served as a memorial to her dedication and hard work in running the Sunset Series for many years.

The Shadden Series #2 is a one day regatta hosted by Cal YC as part of the Southern California Youth Yacht Racing Association (SCYYRA) Shadden Series. The event is sailed in the Club Flying Junior (CFJ), and the series is named for John Shadden, a Southern California sailor that represented the USA in the 470 Class at the 1988 Olympic Games, earning a bronze medal crewing for skipper Charlie McKee.
